Hee Yun Kim is the first-prize winner of Pablo Casals International Composition Competition in France. Her music has been reviewed as “fully convincing” and “masterfully orchestrated” by Paris: La Lettre du Musicien. Her compositions have been performed in Europe, Asia, and North America including New York, Boston, Chicago, Ottawa, Amsterdam, Paris, Munich, Krakow, Tokyo and Seoul, and performed by diverse ensembles including l’Orchestre de la Francophonie Canadienne, Ensemble Calliopée, the University of Illinois Orchestra, the New York New Music Ensemble, Seoul Metropolitan Chorus, ALEA III, HET Trio, harpist Ann Yeung, and Cellist Romain Garioud.
She is a recipient of 2020 ArtsActivate grant from the city of Dallas. Her other honors include a jury for the Salvatore Martirano International Composition Award, a recipient of the Seoul Cultural Foundation Grant, a composition review committee for the College Music Society International Conference, the Utah Arts Festival National Commissioning Program Finalist, the National Arts Centre Orchestra’s Composers Programme in Canada, the ALEA III International Composition Competition Finalist, and the Tokyo International Composition Competition Second Prize.
Currently, she lives in Dallas, Texas. Her upcoming performances include “Quantum Musics” for vocal ensemble, written for Verdigris Ensemble, “Story I” for elementary orchestra, written for Young Musicians, an education program of Dallas Symphony Orchestra, “White Rock Lake” for flute, oboe, violin and cello, commissioned by the city of Dallas, and “R.I.P.2020” for clarinet and soprano, commissioned by French clarinetist Julien Hervé and Belgian opera singer Liesbeth Devos.
She received her Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from Seoul National University in Korea, and her doctoral degrees from Krakow Music Academy in Poland and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
